The Faculty of Medicine, University of Syiah Kuala, through its Medical Specialist Education Program (PPDS) had fostered 17 new Medical Specialists. This event was marked by the inauguration and the taking of the Specialist Oath led by the Dean of Medicine Faculty, Prof. Dr. Maimun Syukri, Sp. PD (K) in the Hall of Medicine Faculty, USK. (Banda Aceh, April 2021).
Among the 17 specialists, there were 5 majoring in Surgery, 2 Neurology, 5 Obstetrics and Gynaecology, 2 Otolaryngology, and 2 Paediatrics.
Prof. Maimun in his opening speech mentioned that with the appointment of the new 17 specialists, PPDS USK has already had 75 graduates from Internal Diseases, 70 graduates from Surgery, 21 graduates from the Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and 3 graduates from the Neurology programs.
Therefore, Prof. Maimun expressed his gratefulness and pride for the new specialists as they finished their study which made them ready to serve the community.
Prof. Maimun also told the new specialists to keep their alma mater’s honours by working with integrity. Also, he wanted them to keep in touch with the Faculty of Medicine academic community.
“Should you encounter problems during your service time, please do not hesitate to seek help from your teachers here. Insya Allah, we are ready to provide help so we can build a strong communication.”, he said.
Moreover, Prof. Maimun also mentioned that some alumni of this program have already served in some institutions. For those who do not yet serve in any institutions, The Faculty of Medicine of USK is open to facilitate them as USK staff.
“Because now we need more staff to increase the student admission. It will be such an honour for us if any of you want to join us here in USK.”, he said.
The Vice Rector I Prof. Dr. Ir. Marwan, representing the Head of University congratulated the PPDS graduates. Their long learning journey would be a precious experience for them when they serve the community.
Prof. Marwan also expressed his appreciation to some PPDS graduates who chose to return to their regions; Especially those who returned to some remote and less developed areas. As Prof. Marwan evaluated, in these areas, the medical specialists are limited.
“This is in line with the main goal of PPDS to supply the demands for Medical Specialists in the regional areas. Thus, we are proud of your decision on coming back to your regions.”, he said.
On this occasion, Prof. Marwan also invited the USK Medicine Faculty academic community to become an agent of change in the society during this Covid-19 pandemic era. This can be done by asking people to join and comply with the health protocols while also educating people so that this pandemic may come to an end.
“Just as we know, the Covid-19 cases in Aceh has started to rise again. Therefore, I hope that we all may actively be involved so that the pandemic may finally over.”, he said.
The inauguration was held both online and offline. In the offline session, 8 people were present in the hall while the other 9 people attended the ceremony online. Also attending this activity were the USK FK Deputy Deans and several USK PPDS Study Program Coordinators.
