[Public Relations Unsyiah] - Dozens of world professors and researchers gathered in Banda Aceh, 10-12 October 2018, to attend the 11th Aceh International Workshop and Expo risk management and tsunami disaster recovery conference on Sustainable Tsunami Disaster Recovery (AIWEST-DR) which took place at Hermes Hotel, Banda Aceh.
This biennial activity is organized by the Disaster Mitigation and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC) UPT Disaster Mitigation in collaboration with the International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS) Tohoku University. This year, the conference has the theme "Advancing Science and Technology Innovation for Sustainable Resilience and Risk Reduction".
"This theme was chosen because of the increasing frequency of major disasters in Indonesia and the world in recent times. At the same time to promote scientific research and technological innovation to reduce disaster risk, "said Dr. Khairul Munadi, Chairperson of Unsyiah's Disaster Mitigation Unit.
The 2018 AIWEST-DR Conference presented key speakers, Prof. H. Mohammad Nasir, Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education; and Prof. Shunichi Koshimura, representative from the International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS), Tohoku University, Japan.
The conference was divided into several panel sessions which presented various speakers from various universities in the world, such as from the Australian National University (ANU), Sydney University of Technology (UTS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), University College London, Tohoku University. In addition, also present from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Ar-Raniry State Islamic University, and Unsyiah.
Dr. Khairul admitted, the committee had received as many as 136 papers from 10 countries that would be presented during the AIWEST-DR conference held. According to him, this paper covers various topics, such as Geohazards, Technology and Infrastructure; Coastal City Resilience Towards Natural Hazard; Knowledge management for Disaster Risk Reduction, Disaster Risk Financing and Insurance; Human Security and Disaster Medicine.
Meanwhile, Acting The Governor of Aceh, Nova Iriansyah, appreciated this conference. Moreover, disaster management is one of the priority programs that have been outlined in the Aceh RPJM 2017-2022.
"We hope that this meeting can produce an effective formula in handling disasters, especially if combined with the use of technology so that countermeasures run more accurately and quickly," he concluded.
In this conference, TDMRC Unsyiah also gave awards to two figures who have contributed to disaster risk reduction at the regional and national levels. The two recipients of the TDMRC Awards were Teuku Ahmad Dadek, Chief Executive of BPBA, and Ahmad Arif, Kompas journalist. (fer)
