The International Center for Aceh and Indian Ocean Studies (ICAIOS) have held a routine international conference every 2 years starting from 2007. This conference aimed to gather the experts/ researchers from around the world especially those who investigate Aceh and the areas around Indian Ocean.
On 7-8 April 2021, ICAIOS focused on the theme of Religion, Modernity, and Pandemic on the 8th International Academic event. This international conference was held virtually on Zoom due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The academicians along with the local, national, and international researchers participated as speakers and participants in the ICAIOS conference. Meanwhile, the keynote speakers’ seats were filled by Prof. Anthony Reid (The Australian National University), Prof. Farid Sufian Shuaib (International Islamic University Malaysia), and Dr. Annemarie Samuels (Leiden University).
“Modernity is the cause of the decrease of women's influence in Southeast Asia. In the pre-colonialism era, the women in Southeast Asia had big influences and roles. They were practically better than the Western women. They were not only active in the domestic aspects but also outside the house.”, as explained by Prof. Reid.
Meanwhile, the Vice Rector IV of The University of Syiah Kuala from the Planning, Cooperation and Public Relations Division, Prof. Hizir Sofyan, representing the Rector, in his opening remarks gave his appreciation to the work done by ICAIOS.
“This ICAIOS conference is expected to act as a vessel to disclose the research results, experiences, and critical ideas about the development of religion, modernity, and pandemic. We hope that these ideas would provide input to the development of science and practice across fields and cultures.”, Prof. Hizir said.
ICAIOS is a research center across universities and across nations for Aceh and the areas around the Indian Ocean. This organisation was formed through a collaboration from three universities (The University of Syiah Kuala, Islamic University of Ar Raniry, and The University of Malikussaleh), Aceh Government, the Indonesian Ministry of Research and Technology, and some academic organisations / international researchers. Since 2009, the ICAIOS office is located in Darussalam, Banda Aceh.
