As a form of support to the medical in the face of the Corona virus outbreak (Covid-19), Syiah Kuala University innovated by creating face shields for medical professionals. (Banda Aceh, 4/8/2020).
Head of Innovation and Downstream Development Center Dr. Ir. M. Dirhamsyah, M.T said, face shields are personal protective equipment that is very important for medical when dealing directly with patients. Especially if the patient has a cough or sneeze, the speed can reach 10 meters / second and 50 meters / second.
But in reality, face protection is very difficult to obtain and its availability is increasingly limited. For this reason, Unsyiah through the Faculty of Engineering which involves students of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, tries to innovate by designing and making these face protection devices.
"Design with CAD is carried out to create 3-Dimensional drawing models, which are then designed using 3D Printing machines. Three variations of the quality of Face Shield (PW) that we design are PW1 (Lower Grade), PW2 (Medium Grade) and PW3 (High Grade), "said Dirhamsyah.
All of these designs initially only used two machines, then added one machine from SMK 2. Until now, Unsyiah and partners were able to do Face Shield production using seven 3D Printing machines.
With the availability of engine capacity and innovative product designs, the students finally succeeded in producing up to 200 units per day. Until today Unsyiah has been producing in stages and has produced 500 units and a number have been donated to RSUDZA, Prince Nayef Hospital, Sigli Hospital, and the medical. Production capacity can continue to be increased in accordance with the need to help medical staff who function as the frontline for COVID-19 countermeasures.
"Hopefully, technological innovation, togetherness and sincerity in these collaborations, the engineers can continue to contribute in the face of this COVID-19 Extraordinary Event (KLB)," he said.
Dirhamyah admitted that the spirit of togetherness to form a medical presence was very much felt in this activity. Where in the initial stages, the team faced many obstacles in verifying product design that reflected an attractive, millennial shape and provided comfort in wearing. So finally this product can be used by medical.
However, the enthusiasm and unyielding determination shown by students caused many parties to be interested in participating together to help accelerate this innovative product. Even the Unsyiah Dharma Wanita also gave an important role so that students get excellent enthusiasm, sufficient nutrition and energy.
"This is the pleasure of doing something innovative with togetherness and sincerity, which manifests cohesiveness in the spirit of mutual assistance in defending the medics," he said.
Similarly, support from University Leaders, such as Rector, Prof. Dr. Ir. Samsul Rizal, M.Eng, IPU, Chair of the 19th COVID Task Force Prof. Dr. Ir. Marwan, and Chairman of LPPM Prof. Dr. Taufik Fuadi Abidin, S.SI, M.Tech, who immediately took to the field.
"They participated in product validation and as a determinant of success in developing technological innovations in the design and manufacturing of these face shields," he said.
For this reason, Dirhamsyah feels very grateful that this PPE preparedness technology innovation has received a lot of support, especially from the Dean of the Unsyiah Faculty of Engineering and their staff who have provided facilities for carrying out activities in the Design and Manufacturing Laboratory.
"We hope that the spirit of togetherness like this will further motivate the Unsyiah academic community to continue to innovate and work, especially in the current pandemic," he concluded.
