Universitas Syiah Kuala in the Open Cour led by the Rector of the university, Prof. Dr. Ir. Samsul Rizal, M.Eng inaugurated 1.177 graduates from Bachelor / Professional / Specialist / Postgraduate and Diploma for the February-April 2021 period. In this 149th graduation, USK held both online and offline graduation ceremonies in the AAC Dayan Dawood Building.
Rector explained that from 1.177 graduates, 53 graduated with honors or cum laude. On this day, USK is recorded to have 137.909 alumni from Bachelor / Professional / Specialist / Postgraduate and Diploma levels. On this occasion, the Rector reminded everyone that Covid19 pandemic has not yet ended. In reality, the Covid19 cases significantly rose both in Aceh and in Indonesia in general.
This Covid19 pandemic has also taken many lives including the late Prof. Syamsuddin Mahmud, M.Si, one of the university’s founders and Aceh Governor from 1993-2000. His passing away was such a loss for us all, the Rector said.
The Rector then explained that Prof. Syamsuddin had been tested negative yet the next day he was found weak with a low oxygen saturation. This illustrated how dangerous the virus is. Although the test result came back as negative, but it had already attacked the respiratory system.
“That is why we want to keep reminding people to be discipline in implementing the health protocols. Do not ever get bored of washing your hands, wearing masks, physical distancing, and avoiding crowds. All these protocols may be difficult to implement but it is way better for our safety and health.”, the Rector added.
In addition, the Rector also asked the graduates to educate and show a good example of how to face the pandemic to the society. Therefore, our society would understand that this is a dangerous virus and we cannot go through it without working together.
“We need to raise awareness and never forget to pray. We hope that Allah will always protect us and that this pandemic may end soon.”, the Rector said.
Moreover, the Rector also mentioned about the high competitiveness and difficulty in workplaces. He then encouraged the graduates to never be discouraged to find other opportunities besides becoming a government official.
This high and difficult competitiveness in the workplaces should motivate our graduates to develop and come up with innovations to create new opportunities. We should also consider a business plan to be successful in the future.
“Therefore, we hope that USK graduates would not mind to open their eyes and mind and use what they have received in their study period to be creative and innovative in creating various possibilities in the workplaces.”, said the Rector.
